Internship Opportunities
88.5 WFDD has a college level internship program, in cooperation with Triad area colleges and universities. The goal of the internship program is to provide practical experience in the radio broadcasting and nonprofit industry, and to teach skills that can only be learned on the job.
The station is generally able to accommodate up to 6 interns per semester, one per track, depending on individual circumstances and other factors. Exceptions to this policy will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
88.5 WFDD currently offers 6 tracks for internships:
Candidates must complete an application form and submit it with a cover letter, resume, and two letters of recommendation. All applications should be submitted as a complete package if possible.
Internship positions are open until they are filled. Students are encouraged to apply for an internship as much as 6 months before their proposed start date.

If you have been selected to be interviewed, you will be contacted by 88.5 WFDD following the receipt of the complete application package. Applicants are encouraged to make a follow up call or send an email approximately 1 week after submitting a complete package.
Each intern will be expected to work throughout the duration of the semester. On average, interns are expected to work 15-20 hours a week during normal business hours. Some weekend and evening work may be required. Business casual attire and professional conduct are expected at all times.
Each semester, 88.5 WFDD will attempt to accommodate up to 6 interns depending on other circumstances. 88.5 WFDD may choose to alter any aspect of the internship program to best accommodate both the student's and the station's unique needs as necessary. 88.5 WFDD offers only unpaid internships at this time.
Internship track information
Students may apply for one or more of the following areas:
Membership and Individual Giving Internship
Ideal for students majoring in Nonprofit Management, Communications, Business or related fields of study or pursing a career in nonprofit fundraising or university and business administration.
The Membership and Individual Giving interns will learn the unique fundamentals of individual giving in public radio through working with both on-air and off-air fundraising techniques. Interns will work primarily with the Membership department and may also assist with The Public Radio Society, WFDD’s major giving program.
Tasks may include assisting with preparing for on-air pledge drives, off air efforts including mail correspondence, and processing charitable gifts in accordance with WFDD, university and IRS polices.
WFDD News Intern
Ideal for students majoring in Journalism, Broadcasting, Political Science, Communication or related fields or pursing a career as a journalist in any media, on-air radio host, audio production engineer or most other fields related to public service.
WFDD News Interns will learn the fundamentals of news and news gathering and become familiar with the equipment and best practices necessary to gather news, conduct interviews, and write on-air copy.
Tasks may include shadowing reporters in the field, collecting and recording audio, conducting research, and working to produce news stories through editing.
Operations and Production Intern
Ideal for students majoring in Audio Engineering, Broadcasting Production Technology, Computer Science and related fields.
The Operations and Production internship is a technical program requiring previous experience with audio production. Applicants must be experienced and comfortable working within the Windows environment without supervision.
Tasks may include research, audio editing, assisting with station automation, and website work.
Marketing and Community Events Intern
Ideal for students majoring in Commutation, Marketing, English or related fields of study or pursing a career in marketing, brand management, event planning, corporate communication, public relations or similar fields related to strategic communications.
The Marketing and Community Events Intern will assist in all public relations and marketing efforts including strategic communication activities such as press releases, working with print advertising needs, and researching marketing practices at other public and commercial radio stations as well as other nonprofit organizations. Interns may also aid in planning and implementation of station sponsored public events.
Tasks may include graphic design work, writing press releases, attending community events as a WFDD representative and researching trends in marketing.
Social Media Intern
Ideal for students majoring in Commutation, Marketing, English or related fields of study or pursing a career in marketing, brand management, event planning, corporate communication, public relations or similar fields related to strategic communications.
The Social Media Intern will work with the Marketing Coordinator, Webmaster and News Director to manage the online presence of WFDD on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
Tasks may include producing social media communications, researching established and emerging best practices in online brand management and collecting metrics for evaluating the effectiveness of social media marketing and outreach.
Underwriting Intern
Ideal for students majoring in Business, Marketing, Broadcasting, Communication or related fields of study or pursing a career in sales, marketing, media management or related fields
The Underwriting Intern will learn how financial support for WFDD from local business is cultivated. Working with an Underwriting Sales Manager, the intern will gain experience with sales, research and other skills associated with public radio’s equivalent of advertising.
Tasks may include writing, updating and disseminating sales kits, draft sales proposals, presentations and contracts, research and approach possible new business underwriters and trade opportunities.

It broadcasts news, information, and public affairs programming covering the arts, people, and institutions in the area from both its Winston-Salem and Greensboro studios.
The state's charter NPR® member, 88.5 WFDD is the longest continuously broadcasting public radio station in North Carolina. It is a member of the North Carolina Public Radio Association.
