The North Carolina income tax filing deadline is Wednesday. The recent tax law changes have reduced refunds for many taxpayers.

While filers are accustomed to either paying taxes by April 15 or even getting money back, the pain may be more or windfall less as 2013 tax law changes are now being fully carried out.

Many itemized deductions were limited or eliminated by the tax overhaul law in exchange for a lower, flat income tax rate.

Workers benefited from the lower rates because less tax was withheld from their paychecks. But accountants notice some clients are having to pay more when filling out their returns because deductions they relied are on gone.

Older adults have complained about the loss of the medical expense deduction and an increase in taxes they have to pay.
