GOP lawmakers are discussing how to put more money into the Job Development Investment Grant. Rules Chairman David Lewis of Dunn said Monday that House Republicans are seeking to replenish one of the favored recruitment tools of North Carolina governors.

The proposed rejuvenation will come even as a report from the liberal-leaning North Carolina Justice Center found 60 percent of projects receiving assistance from the program over an 11-year period failed.

Lewis says the bill expected to be introduced this week will include a new method to calculate income for corporate taxes that has been known to benefit capital-intensive companies. Details are still being worked out.

Gov. Pat McCrory has said he needs more tools to compete with states in corporate recruitment.
