High Point may get a new ball park that could draw an estimated 75 thousand people into the city. A team with ties to two cities say they're excited about a possible move.

The HiToms name was derived from the two cities: High Point, and Thomasville - where they now play in the 80-year-old Finch Field. The proposed ballpark in High Point would be near the historic Washington Street neighborhood.

HiToms president Greg Suire says the move would not end the long-standing connection to the Chair City.

“I have no intentions of taking Thomasville out of our brand name, absolutely not,” he says. “Thomasville has kept this team - along with High Point - alive since 1937. We really want to marry these two communities and this is that great bridge builder that can make that occur.”

Suire says the HiToms would still like to run programs at Finch Field, including youth baseball.

Both Greensboro and Winston-Salem have used their minor-league ballparks to spur downtown development. The proposed High Point ballpark would be smaller than either of those.. The HiToms team is in the Coastal Plain League, a summer program for collegiate standouts.

The High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau made the proposal but did not say how much it would cost or who would pay for it.
