Governor McCrory has weighed in on the recent laws changing the Greensboro City Council, calling it a bad bill.  He also plans to speak with lawyers about the legality of the measure.

The Greensboro News and Record reports that the controversial bill does away with at-large council seats in favor of eight districts and a mayor who is voted on by the entire city. It also limits the mayor's vote to ties and dramatically changes the council's district lines.

Local bills, such as House Bill 263, do not require a governor's approval to become law. McCrory says this is a local bill in name only.

McCrory, a Republican, said he was against overreach from Raleigh when he was the mayor of Charlotte and the state government was controlled by Democrats. Now it's his own party reaching out.

The Greensboro City Council will hold a special public hearing on the issue Wednesday. Mayor Nancy Vaughan said the city is speaking with lawyers about a potential legal challenge.
