McCrory Orders Stepped-Up Security For National Guard

Gov. Pat McCrory is ordering tighter security measures at North Carolina National Guard facilities.

His order Sunday was in response to last week's shootings at military recruiting centers in Tennessee that left four Marines and one sailor dead.

McCrory's order calls for stepped-up security at recruiting centers, armories and readiness centers. The governor says the state will be vigilant in protecting those people who protect the state's citizens.

Voting Rights Trial Enters Second Week

The first week of a federal voting rights trial featured testimony that changes to the law in 2013 put an undue burden on minority voters.

More than 20 witnesses have already testified in the case, which challenges sweeping changes made to the state's voting laws two years ago.

Experts this week are expected to testify that election fraud is not a significant problem in North Carolina.

Plaintiffs are expected to wrap up by Thursday. The state will then put on their witnesses, who will argue the law is fair and on designed to disenfranchise minorities.

Hundreds Rally In Support Of NC Confederate Monument

Petitions are circulating in Alamance County to keep the statue of a Confederate soldier on the grounds of the county courthouse in Graham.

Local media outlets report about 1,500 people, many carrying Confederate flags, rallied at the courthouse Saturday to oppose calls to remove the monument that has stood for 101 years.

Organizers say they have more than 6,500 signatures both online and on paper calling for the monument to remain and petitions were being circulated during the rally held in 90-degree heat.

NC Lawmakers Get Behind March 15 Presidential Primary

North Carolina Republican legislators appear to have settled on a new presidential primary date next year.

Key lawmakers said Saturday that House and Senate GOP leaders have agreed in principle to move the Democratic and Republican primary to March 15.

A 2013 state law set the presidential primary for late February. But the Republican National Committee has threatened North Carolina's GOP with losing most of their nominating delegates to next summer's convention if it remained in February. Florida, Ohio and Missouri also have scheduled March 15 primaries.

Construction To Close Section Of Business 40

Motorists using Business 40 near Kernersville will encounter a shutdown this week as part of a construction project.

The N.C. Department of Transportation says contractors are closing a 0.4-mile section of the left lane along westbound I-40 Business near N.C. 66 in Kernersville in preparation for realignment work along the Macy Grove Road Improvement Project.

According to NCDOT, work will begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, and is expected to be completed by midnight on Saturday, Aug. 15. While only the left lane will be closed, NCDOT recommends drivers use I-40 instead of I-40 Business.
