There's another development in legislative attempts to restructure local governments in the state. A group of Wake County voters are challenging the Legislature's newly drawn boundaries for commissioner districts. The lawsuit is being framed as a civil rights issue.

WRAL-TV reports the lawsuit filed Thursday is a response to changes legislators approved last week in how county leaders are elected. The lawsuit filed by the Raleigh Wake Citizens Association and 14 voters alleges the districts' racially gerrymandered lines violate their civil rights.

Wake County is the second-largest county in the state.

Supporters have said the changes will improve voter representation. Democrats have argued the measure is sure to help Republicans win back seats.

Redistricting is also a controversial topic in Guilford County. The City of Greensboro has hired a law firm to lobby against a bill that restructures the City Council. The firm is also helping the city form a legal strategy should that fight go to court.
