Ten demonstrators were arrested Wednesday in Raleigh following a push for better paychecks for minimum wage workers. The protestors were associated with the “Moral Monday” movement against Republican state government policies.

Those arrested called attention to their effort to ask the legislature to place a statewide referendum on the ballot to raise the minimum wage from the current $7.25 per hour. GOP leaders have expressed no interest in doing so.

The demonstrators were led away in plastic handcuffs by Capital police after remaining in the Legislative Building after its posted 5 p.m. closing time. General Assembly Police Chief Jeff Weaver says they would be charged with second-degree trespassing.

The "Moral Monday" movement has been holding regular rallies against GOP actions since 2013, leading to more than 1,000 arrests.
