A major new development has been proposed for downtown Winston-Salem.

The Brookstown District would bring more than one million square feet of residential, retail and office space to the area near BB&T Ballpark. It's expected to be a nearly $200-million project.

The ballpark is home of the minor-league Winston-Salem Dash. Dash president Geoff Lassiter says the development is part of a trend of mixing ballparks with other types of building uses.

"The biggest new development in baseball right now is the Atlanta Braves new stadium and some of the multi-use village development around it," Lassiter says. "And some of the same partners and team members that are on that project will be on this project from an architectural standpoint and things of that nature."

The development would go on land just east and north of the ballpark, property that now is mostly either vacant or used for Dash parking. The developer, Atlanta-based Brand Properties, says the new space could include restaurants and a grocery store.

Work on the project could begin by the end of the year.
