Forsyth Technical Community College offers training on computer skills like writing emails and using the internet.

Nineteen men and women received certificates at FTCC Friday after about a month of learning Microsoft Office and basic internet tools.

According to a 2012 report by the U.S. Census Bureau, nationally more than 13 million adults between the age of 35-64 do not have internet access in their homes. Before taking the class, Monica Upson had little experience surfing the web. She says even though she's not looking for a job, the skills she's learned at the class help her through her day.

“By me not having it [internet access], it's a bit slack in my life," explains Upson. "As far as looking up my medications...going online to my doctor's office, I can send messages to them.”

Each graduate also purchased a refurbished laptop and a padded backpack for $50. Another group will take the Technology Skills for Life and Employment class in a few weeks. Also at the graduation, City Councilman Dan Besse read a proclamation by Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines, recognizing September 12, 2014 as Digital Literacy Awareness Day.
