Greensboro's Women's Hospital is moving to the campus of Moses Cone Memorial Hospital.

Cone Health is launching a five-year expansion plan. It includes building a new Women's Hospital on the main campus. These services will be housed in a 50,000 square feet wing. Cone Health President Terry Akin says this will give mothers and infants greater access to specialists, particularly in the case of an emergency.

“It will allow us to join together all of our pediatric services including the Neo-Natal ICU, the Pediatric ICU and general pediatrics, which right now are three miles apart on separate campuses,” explains Akin.

The $100 million plan also includes changes to the behavioral health hospital. Outpatient services, which are those not requiring a hospital stay, will be moved to several different locations by 2016. Akin says this will improve community access. Eventually, a new hospital will be built for behavioral health.

Another aspect of this plan involves renovating and expanding operating rooms at Wesley Long Hospital to accommodate new technology.

State approval is required before construction can begin on any of these projects. Moses Cone hopes to break ground on the  Women's Hospital in the next two years.
