The Stokes County courthouse is one of several government buildings in North Carolina that will soon bear the saying “In God We Trust”.

A group known as the U.S. Motto Action Committee will pay to install the phrase on the Stokes County Courthouse.

The Stokes County Commission recently approved the request by Fred McClure, a member of the organization and a commissioner in Davidson County.

The group will raise funds for the installation of the letters, which is expected to be anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000. McClure says the phrase is part of American history.

“It's over the Senate and House Chambers and it goes way back to the Civil War," says McClure. "If you're proud of America, and proud of the United States, which anyone who lives here should be, this is just an attempt to recognize that.”

In 2011, Congress signed a resolution reaffirming “In God We Trust” as the national motto, and since that time, McClure and the U.S. Motto Action Committee have reached out to several cities and counties to add the phrase to government buildings.

Groups like the ACLU have fought against the motto, saying it violates the separation between church and state.

Other counties that have approved it are Alamance, Davidson, and Davie. McClure says his group will ask all counties in North Carolina to consider adding the phrase.
