A North Carolina agency is asking for the public's help to deter a wildlife nuisance at boat ramps.

In some of North Carolina's public fishing areas, people aren't the only ones making a catch. Vultures are scavenging on dead fish remains and also damaging vehicles.

“They scratch the hoods and roofs when they're walking across and pulling apart the rubber on windshield wipers," says Ann May, extension biologist with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

May explains that the rubber is similar to the hide of animals that vultures eat. These birds are also leaving droppings on vehicles.

According to May, most of the complaints have come from people fishing at  Lake Mont on Baden Lake, South Point in Lake Wiley and Flat Creek on Tuckertown Reservoir.

To discourage the pesky birds, May advises anglers and people using the boat ramps not to leave any of the fish remains, which will prevent vultures from being attracted to the area.

The state currently uses fireworks and hangs stuffed vulture replicas to scare away the federally protected birds.
