Piedmont Triad International Airport has long been a hub of transportation, and now it may start attracting a new kind of vehicle.

The airport has installed a series of electric car charging stations in its parking decks. The charging stations will allow vehicle owners to charge their cars for free on a first come, first-served basis. Tom Dunlap manages parking and transportation at the airport. He says the idea originally came from airport employees. But when airport officials started researching the charging stations, they found there could also be demand for travelers.

The new stations are not the fastest on the market. It will take 6 to 8 hours to fully charge a vehicle. But since most travelers are gone two to three days, the charge time shouldn't matter to most users.

There are a total of eight charging stations at the airport now. They are located on the second level of the parking garage, across from baggage pickup. Dunlap says that number could grow if the demand is there,

Airport officials are in the process of testing the stations. They are expected to be fully operational by August.
