| Winston-Salem, NC—88.5 WFDD, the Piedmont Triad’s public
radio station, will broadcast A Conversation with Richard Leakey
on Sunday, April 29, at 7:00pm. Leakey, the world’s best-known
paleoanthropologist and the son of the famous Drs. Louis B. and Mary
Leakey, spoke at Guilford College’s Dana Auditorium on Tuesday,
April 17 to an audience of 650 people. WFDD’s news director
and associate general manager Denise Franklin hosted the event.
Leakey has been credited with some of the most significant fossil
discoveries of the 20th century. He is a global thinker, influential
environmentalist, and the author of over 100 articles and books,
including Origins, The Sixth Extinction, and his memoir, Wildlife
Wars: My Fight to Save Africa’s National Treasures, an account
of his time spent as head of Kenya’s wildlife service. During
the event at Guilford, he spoke of that time, and his battles with
poachers over the lives of elephants; the necessity of keeping humans
and animals in Africa separate; and climate change in Africa. He
graciously answered some questions from the audience.
Piedmont Triad residents who missed the event can hear the conversation
with Dr. Richard Leakey, moderated by Denise Franklin, by tuning
in to 88.5 WFDD at 7:00pm on Sunday, April 29.
88.5 WFDD, the NPR® news and Triad Arts station broadcasting
from Wake Forest University, is the only public radio station of
its kind located in the Piedmont Triad. It broadcasts news, information,
and public affairs programming covering the arts, people, and institutions
in the area from both its Winston-Salem and Greensboro studios.
The state’s charter NPR® member, 88.5 WFDD is the longest
continuously broadcasting public radio station in North Carolina.
