HD Radio is coming to 88.5 WFDD

Winston-Salem, NC-88.5 WFDD, the Piedmont Triad's public radio station, is converting to digital broadcasting in October, 2007. WFDD has been working on the conversion process for several months, installing new equipment and determining programming for the new digital channels. The station intends to "flip the switch" in early October. HD radio has a reputation for providing high quality audio and expanded program offerings. More than 1,360 stations nationwide are broadcasting with HD Radio technology and more than 600 of those stations are offering Multicast channels, as WFDD intends to do.

After the conversion is complete and the digital transmitter is installed, the station will begin multicasting two digital signals: WFDD-2, an all classical music broadcast, and WFDD-1, a duplicate broadcast of its current programs. In January, the station intends to launch a third digital channel, featuring an eclectic blend of world music, roots and traditional music, and music from local artists.

The all-classical broadcast will include Performance Today, opera performances every Saturday, including the Metropolitan Opera, and area performances. There is no subscription fee for HD Radio, but listeners will need a digital radio to hear the digital broadcasts. Many area retailers are now stocking a variety of HD Radios and dozens of HD Radio models, for home and car use, are available online. Additionally, WFDD plans to stream the programming heard on WFDD-2 at its website, www.wfdd.org. Listeners without digital radios can continue to listen the current programming as usual, or can stream the digital channels from a computer.

General Manager Denise Franklin stated that, "HD Radio is part of the future of our business. The multiple channels provide opportunities for us to expand our public service. It's exciting to think that by early next year 88.5 WFDD will, in effect, have tripled our program offerings."
