88.5 WFDD Brings StoryCorps National Oral History Project to the Triad

Winston-Salem, NC—88.5 WFDD is partnering with StoryCorps, the national oral history project, to bring its mobile recording booth, a converted Airstream trailer, to Winston-Salem for a one-month residency. The MobileBooth will park in downtown Winston-Salem at Winston Square Park on February 26th, and will collect stories of everyday residents of the Triad and surrounding communities.

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to share and preserve the stories of Americans across the United States and to promote the art of listening. Since 2003, tens of thousands of people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorps. Interviews are collected during an annual nationwide tour, in a soundproof recording studio within an Airstream trailer. The StoryCorps project is unique in that interviews are conducted between two people who have a personal connection, rather than by a professional interviewer or historian. It is this distinction, said WFDD Membership and Marketing Coordinator Molly Davis, “that makes these interviews so compelling.”

Each interview pair will receive a high-quality CD of the interview and a copy will be cataloged at The American Folklife Center at The Library of Congress. WFDD will air some of the local interviews. Some local interviews may be selected to air nationally, during NPR®’s Morning Edition, which is heard locally on WFDD each weekday morning. Approximately one percent of all interviews collected across the country are chosen for national broadcast.

When asked about WFDD’s participation in this project, General Manager Denise Franklin said, “public service and community engagement are ingrained in the mission of public radio, and our partnership with StoryCorps is a prime example of WFDD’s efforts to touch our community. The Piedmont Triad has a rich tradition of story telling. We are very excited to partner with StoryCorps to help carry on that tradition. We know our entire community will join us in welcoming StoryCorps to the Piedmont.”

88.5 WFDD, the NPR ® News and Triad Arts Station broadcasting from Wake Forest University, is the only public radio station of its kind located in the Piedmont Triad. It broadcasts news, information, and public affairs programming covering the arts, people, and institutions in the area from both its Winston-Salem and Greensboro studios. The state’s charter NPR ® member, 88.5 WFDD is the longest continuously broadcasting public radio station in North Carolina. It is a member of the North Carolina Public Radio Association. .
