88.5 WFDD Raises More Money in Less Time during its February Campaign

Winston-Salem, NC—88.5 WFDD, the Piedmont Triad’s NPR® affiliate, which is licensed to Wake Forest University, raised over $70,000 in just three days of on-air fundraising during its recent "I Love Public Radio" Campaign. This is the third year the station has held a February pledge drive, but the first time it has employed a "hit and quit" method of fundraising, meaning that the station would stop fundraising once its goal was met.

Denise Franklin, general manager of WFDD, said, "our listeners have made it clear that what they value most about our station is the programming. In an effort to honor that, we put the length of the campaign into the hands of our listeners, and they responded. We envision employing this method of fundraising in future drives, since our listeners and donors so clearly embraced the idea of less on air fundraising."

Last year’s WFDD "I Love Public Radio" campaign raised $37,677 in four days of on air fundraising. The station development staff feels that the excellent results of this year’s campaign are attributed to both the "hit and quit" messaging, as well as an exciting trip giveaway and good premium, or thank-you, items.

Volunteers, plus local businesses, restaurants, and arts and community organizations supported the station during its pledge drive. Membership coordinators commented that the pledge drives "really are a community effort."

For fiscal year 2009, which runs from July 1st through June 30th, the station is seeking a total of $646,015 in membership revenue, which accounts for approximately half of the station’s operating budget. The station’s fundraising campaigns comprise a direct mail portion in addition to the on air fundraising efforts. WFDD has around 100,000 listeners over 32 counties in the Piedmont Triad region; its membership roster includes roughly 6,000 individuals. The station membership department stated that on air fundraising efforts are the best way to reach listeners who are not yet contributors.

88.5 WFDD, the NPR ® News and Triad Arts Station broadcasting from Wake Forest University, is the only public radio station of its kind located in the Piedmont Triad. It broadcasts news, information, and public affairs programming covering the arts, people, and institutions in the area from both its Winston-Salem and Greensboro studios. The state’s charter NPR® member, 88.5 WFDD is the longest continuously broadcasting public radio station in North Carolina. It is a member of the North Carolina Public Radio Association. .
