88.5 WFDD Reports Record-Breaking Response to One Day Pledge Drive

Winston-Salem, NC—On Wednesday, October 20th, 88.5 WFDD, the public radio station licensed to Wake Forest University, condensed its normal ten-day fall pledge drive into just one day, reaching 84% of its goal of 2,000 pledges. This is the second year in a row that the station, which serves 32 counties in northwest North Carolina and southern Virginia, followed this shortened pledge drive model used by only about a dozen other stations across the country. The intention of a shortened pledge drive is to raise essential funds for the public radio station, with limited interruptions to its regular programming.

Last fall’s one-day pledge drive closed with 72% of its goal of 1,800 pledges and WFDD went back on the air for a second day to make up the shortfall. This year’s One Day Wednesday brought in more contributions than any other single day of fundraising in the history of the station. With the drive showing such an increase in pledges, WFDD General Manager Denise Franklin stated that "the response to the one-day drive is a clear indication that our listeners value the programming on WFDD and they appreciate the shortened pledge drive format."

The extended pre-drive promotion of this fall’s campaign combined with on-air efforts on October 20th raised a campaign total $161,288. Franklin, who has been WFDD’s General Manger for three years, commented, "At this time, WFDD’s financial health is the best it has ever been. I have no doubt that our listeners will come through for us, helping us to raise the membership revenue we need this year to keep the station fiscally sound."

WFDD membership representatives said that pledges continue to come in via telephone and the station’s website.
