88.5 WFDD announces Radio 101, a new education program for high school students
|
Winston-Salem, NC—88.5 WFDD, the NPR® affiliate licensed to Wake Forest University, recently launched a new community education program for high school students entitled Radio 101. The program is now underway at Carver High School in Winston-Salem and The Middle College at Guilford Technical Community College in High Point. This spring, WFDD will begin airing stories produced by students participating in Radio 101.
"There is a lot of discussion this week about funding for public broadcasting. This program is a great example of the community projects public radio stations like WFDD are doing— even beyond the programs which are not generally broadcast anywhere else on your radio dial," said Greg Keener, who oversees Membership and Education Programs for WFDD.
Radio 101 teaches interested students about journalism, technology, personal reflection and storytelling and includes access to digital recorders, microphones, and laptops for editing audio. This year, Radio 101 is being taught by Lopa Shah and Jameil Hamilton with assistance and input from WFDD staff. Shah works for Big Brothers, Big Sisters and has taught documentary radio classes at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and the Latin American Youth Center. Hamilton is a former television news producer and is currently an MFA candidate at the Documentary Film Program at Wake Forest University; she has also taught broadcast journalism for Wake Forest’s department of communications.
"The greatest thing about the program is that it creates a sense of curiosity within the students as they explore stories, both personal and journalistic," says Shah. Hamilton adds, "Radio 101 is helping students see the power of their own stories and ideas."
Radio 101 is the most recent program in WFDD’s education initiative. This summer WFDD will host the second offering of WFDD Radio Camp, a week-long day camp for middle school students. WFDD Radio Camp will be held in July in both Greensboro and Winston-Salem. Additionally, WFDD offers college level internship programs and can provide station tours and speakers to educational organizations.
"Programs like Radio 101 and WFDD Radio Camp are part of our mission as a locally based, community focused radio station. WFDD’s recent vision statement specifically refers to our education initiative. We are thrilled to partner with Carver and The Middle College at GTCC on this project. Just as programming on public radio can uniquely give our listeners information and experiences, this program can open the world to students through listening, writing, producing, and sharing powerful stories," said WFDD General Manager Denise Franklin.
88.5 WFDD, the NPR® News and Triad Arts Station broadcasting from Wake Forest University, is the only public radio station of its kind located in the Piedmont Triad. It broadcasts news, information, and public affairs programming covering the arts, people, and institutions in the area from both its Winston-Salem and Greensboro studios. It has been broadcasting in HD since October 2007 and features three HD channels available with an HD radio or via mp3 streams on its website. Founded in 1948, 88.5 WFDD is the longest continuously broadcasting public radio station in North Carolina and is the state’s charter NPR® member. It is a member of the North Carolina Public Radio Association, and serves 32 counties across the Piedmont Triad, Northwest North Carolina, and Southern Virginia.
