2nd Annual Winston-Salem Songwriter Sessions Features Tyler Nail, Johnathan Loos, and Colin Allured

Songwriter sessions are typically a chance to be a fly on the wall as musicians perform their original songs and then share their thoughts, feelings, and opinions on the craft of songwriting. This Saturday night, April 29th, those four walls will be the Community Arts Café.

This Weekend the 5th Annual Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention Takes Place

The 5th annual Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention rounds out the month of March with award-winning musicians, free workshops, great food, and lots of dance. There’ll also be luthier displays, band competitions, and great live performances by Mountain Park Old Time Band, Slate Mountain Ramblers and Back-Step. Back-Step members bassist Buck Buckner and fiddler Nick McMillian are co-organizers.

It’s not every day you get the chance to hear five bassoonists performing together, much less five of the most innovative and accomplished bassoonists in the world. Dark in the Song, a contemporary bassoon collective formed in 2010 is that dream team bassoon ensemble: University of NC School of the Arts instructor Saxton Rose, Rachel Elliot, Michael Harley, Lynn Hileman and Peter Kolkay.

Meet the Artist: Cory Willingham

Cory Willingham

Cory Willingham is a versatile artist with interests in the physical world, psychology and nature, and many of those interests find their way into her work. One of Cory’s self-described obsessions is extreme weather, and for years she’s attempted to capture through her paintings the devastating impacts of tornadoes, and hurricanes on people’s lives. Her 2011 exhibition “Tales from the Road” opened the then brand new Yadkin Cultural Arts Center in Yadkinville.

The Dan River Girls and the Life of Downtown Winston-Salem

The Dan River Girls.

The Dan River Girls are 14-year-old mandolinist and cellist Fiona Burdette, and her sisters 12-year-old Ellie on bass, and 9-year-old Jessie on fiddle. You can frequently catch them in concert during Roots Revival at Centenary Methodist Church in downtown Winston-Salem. They’ve also played at several outdoor festivals in the Triad and surrounding areas including Second Sundays on Fourth in downtown Winston-Salem.  The first 2014 Second Sunday on Fourth is scheduled for May 11th.
