Mary Martin Niepold is a Lexington grandmother reaching out to African grandmothers who are raising their AIDS orphaned grandchildren.

She' s the founder of The Nyanya Project, a non profit foundation supporting various efforts to educate African grandmothers in basic business and craft making skills. In 2009, Mary was named a Purpose Prize Fellow, an honor for social entrepreneurs age 60 and older who use their experience and passion to affect social change.

Under the Nyanya Project, one group of grandmothers in Nairobi has created a pre-school for 2-5 year olds in their community. It' s providing jobs for some women in the village while also nurturing a new generation.

Meanwhile, the foundation is getting a lot of support from people and businesses in the Piedmont. Blessing in Winston-Salem is covering the operating costs of the Pre-School Center in Nirobe, freeing up almost 10-thousand dollars for other projects.

Plus, our literary critic Dudley Shearburn reviews Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee by Dee Brown.
