Friday, Apr 2, 2010: Matt Lewis
Matt Lewis is a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer, documenting some of our nation’s historic events and figures - including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Burt Lancaster, Sidney Poitier and former president John F. Kennedy lying in state.
He was the second African American photographer hired by the Washington Post and for almost 30 years he photographed Presidents, politicians, fashion, sports, civil rights events, celebrities and everyday working people.
But this Thomasville resident says even working for the nation's top newspaper did not shield him from racism.
After leaving the Washington Post, Lewis shot for the Thomasville Times. He's now working on a documentary chronicling four generations of photographers in his family. Matt is the third.
