Friday, Apr 23, 2010: Kimani Griffin & Dr. Anthony Atala
Our first guest on this 8th Anniversary Edition of Voices & Viewpoints speeds around a track on 8 wheels, setting records and winning national titles. Then with ease he sits on a stage earning national awards for classical guitar.
This renaissance man is 19-year old Kimani Salim Griffin. As a first grader, he began playing the guitar and a friend’s skating birthday party sparked his interest in in-line skating.
Now he’s getting ready to race in indoor in-line nationals in Lincoln, Nebraska in early July.
Recently, his music has landed him solo concerts on NPR, at Carnegie Hall and in Italy. He’s now studying music performance at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University in Georgia.
Denise first interviewed Kimani in 2006 when he was 16 and attending Reynolds High School.
Our second guest is known around the world for his research and leadership in regenerative medicine…growing organs and skin from a patient’s own cells. He and his team are also part of the Armed Forces Institute for Regenerative Medicine initiative. Its mission is to help wounded soldiers.
Dr. Anthony Atala is the chairman of the Department of Urology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine. He and his team are also now working with researchers in China and Japan to develop new regenerative medicine techniques.
Denise first spoke with Dr. Atala in 2006 when he relocated to Winston-Salem from Boston. Then she sat down with him again in 2009.
