Every Monday on 88.5 WFDD, Jeff
Tiberii brings you sports commentaries of a different
kind. Some are serious, some focus on local topics
and some, we hope, will make you laugh. All are
designed to make us think, talk and explore the
depth of an element of our lives we too often take
at face value.
Woven into our everyday lives, sport can help us
examine issues of ethnicity, religion, socio-economic
class, sexual orientation and gender. It also lets
us root for the underdog, the hometown team and
athletes we personally know.

As we enter a quiet time on the sports calendar WFDD’s Jeff Tiberii explores the relevance of one sports story taking place away off the court and away from the arena. It’s an announcement which bears international significance.
This weekend in sports Tiger Woods hit a birdie put on the final hole of a major golf championship forcing an 18-hole playoff; Dale Earnhardt Jr snapped his 76 race winless streak claiming his first victory for Hendrick Motorsports and the Celtics and Lakers continued to battle in the NBA finals. Ho-hum, just another weekend in sports …
Believe it or not, this week’s sports commentary honors an event even rarer than those.
On a basketball court there are 10 men. In football it’s 11-on-11 and in baseball you can count on 9 fielders and a batter at all times. But there are other people on the playing fields, and WFDD’s Jeff Tiberii has recently been noticing them too much.
