Gov. Roy Cooper announced Thursday $223 million in funding for stormwater and drinking water system improvements in 40 counties, including three Triad communities.

The city of Greensboro will receive $375,000 for stormwater control measures at Fairview Street, while the town of Stonesville in Rockingham County will receive $300,000 for a stormwater study.

Another $315,000 in grants will go to Elkin in Surry County for the development of a plan to protect Elkin Creek.

Cooper says the funding will help support the goal of safer, cleaner drinking water for all North Carolinians.

In the high country, Beech Mountain in Watauga County will receive nearly $3 million for a sewer mains improvement project.

The funding will support a total of 60 projects, including 41 construction projects.
