Funeral services for former U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan will be held on Sunday, November 3.

It will begin at 2 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on N. Elm Street in Greensboro.

A church receptionist says visitation will follow the service at Mullin Life Center, which is nearby on N. Greene Street.

Hagan was elected to the North Carolina Senate in 1998. She became the state's first female Democratic U.S. Senator after defeating Republican Elizabeth Dole a decade later.

Hagan lost her re-election bid in 2014 to Republican Thom Tillis.

In late 2016, she became ill with encephalitis caused by a rare tick-borne virus. Her condition made it difficult to walk or talk and she rarely made public appearances.

This past Sunday, she met with presidential candidate Joe Biden during his campaign stop in Durham.

Hagan died Monday at her home in Greensboro.

She was 66 years old.
