Two North Carolina senators have introduced a resolution recognizing the Montagnards, an indigenous people of the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
The resolution was drawn up by Republican U.S. Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis. It recognizes the Montagnards for fighting alongside U.S. Armed forces during the Vietnam War and calls on Vietnam to end restrictions on basic human rights.
The resolution points to ongoing oppression against the Montagnards in their homeland, where they are forced to renounce their religion. American Montagnards have been prevented from visiting Vietnam.
The News and Observer reports there are about 12,000 Montagnard people currently living in North Carolina, with the majority concentrated in Greensboro, Charlotte, and the Triangle.
Montagnard means “mountaineer” or “mountain dweller” in French.
