Friday, May 29, 2009: Dr. Medge Owen
Dr. Medge Owen
Economist and public health specialists say a mother's mortality rate during childbirth is directly coorelated to her country's socio-economic status.
So Winston-Salem anesthesiologist Dr. Medge Owen created Kybele, an international organization that mobilizes doctors from across the globe so they can teach modern birthing techniques to medical professionals in countries where maternal and newborn deaths are common place.
Currently, they have teaching programs in the Republic of Georgia, Ghana, Egypt and Romania. Next month, they'll begin one in Mongolia.
Plus, our literary critic Dudley Shearburn reviews The Yachoubian Building.
