88.5 WFDD has a college level internship program, in
cooperation with Triad area colleges and universities. The goal of the internship
program is to provide practical experience in the radio broadcasting and
nonprofit industry, and to teach skills that can only be learned on the
job.
The station is generally able to accommodate up to 5 interns
per semester, one per track, depending on individual circumstances
and other factors. Exceptions to this policy will be determined
on a case-by-case basis.
88.5 WFDD currently offers 4 tracks for internships:
Development and Fundraising
Journalism
Operations and Production
Marketing and Public Relations
Corporate Relations and Underwriting
Application procedure information:
Candidates must complete an application form and submit it with a cover
letter, resume, and two letters of recommendation. All applications should
be submitted as a complete package if possible.
Internship positions are open until they are filled. Students are encouraged
to apply for an internship as much as 6 months before their proposed start
date.

If you have been selected to be interviewed, you will be contacted by 88.5
WFDD following the receipt of the complete application package. Applicants
are encouraged to make a follow up call or send an email approximately 1
week after submitting a complete package.
88.5 WFDD Internship Procedures and Expectations
Each intern will be expected to work throughout the duration of the semester.
On average, interns are expected to work 15-20 hours a week during normal
business hours. Some weekend and evening work may be required. Business
casual attire and professional conduct are expected at all times.
Each semester, 88.5 WFDD will attempt to accommodate up to 4 interns depending
on other cirucmstances. 88.5 WFDD may choose to alter any aspect of the
internship program to best accommodate both the student's and the station's
unique needs as necessary. 88.5 WFDD offers only unpaid intersnhips at this
time.
Students may apply for one or more of the following areas:
Development and Fundraising - Assist all aspects of fundraising
including membership and corporate underwriting. Interns will learn the
fundamentals of individual giving cultivation and business sponsorships
through working with both on-air and off-air fundraising techniques. Interns
will work primarily with the Membership and Underwriting department.
Journalism - Learn the fundamentals of news and news gathering,
become familiar with the equipment necessary to gather news, conduct phone
interviews, and write copy. Interns will also shadow a journalist in the
field as available.
Operations and Production - Learn how computer and audio technology
come together to produce excellent radio, archive previously run news pieces,
and learn other technical aspects of operating a public radio station.
Marketing and Public Relations - Assist in all public relations
and marketing efforts including writing and disseminating press releases,
assisting with design of print advertisements, and researching marketing
practices at other public and commercial radio stations and other nonprofit
organizations.
