9-29-2008 CitiGroup buys Wachovia: For more than 200 years ago, the Wachovia name has been closely associated with Winston-Salem's banking growth and strength. In 2001 Wachovia Corporation merged with First Union Corporation and moved its headquarters to Charlotte.
Now, Citigroup is buying Wachovia's banking operations. Wachovia has about 3,400 branches in around 20 eastern and southern states, as well as Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Texas. WFDD's Kathryn Mobley has more.
