Living "Green"

August 12, 2010

Outside it resembles a typical dorm, but inside it's full of the latest "green" technology, solar panels, and energy efficient appliances.

The 67,000 square foot building is located on the southern end of the Wake Forest University Reynolda campus and will house 200 first year students.

Jim Alty is the Associate Vice President for facilities and campus services. He gave WFDD's LeShea Agnew a tour of the apartment style residence hall that includes a recreation room, built-in classroom, media room and kitchen.

According to Alty, the university is seeking a Silver LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Counsel.

Campus officials estimate the eco-friendly building will save the university thousands of dollars a year in utility costs.

According to a green sustainability report, about 44 percent of the country's universities have some form of a "green" residence hall or building.

On August 16th, South Residence Hall will have its formal dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony at 2pm.
