A Winston-Salem dental clinic that serves Medicaid patients received a $1 million grant from a local charity, which will keep the Cleveland Avenue Dental Clinic in operation.
According to the Winston-Salem Journal, The Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust is giving the Forsyth County Department of Public Health the grant. The county's clinic has been operating in the red and faced the risk of closure. The trust approved the two-year grant to stabilize the community dental clinic and will allow it to expand. Oral health is one of key components of the trust's mission.
The Forsyth County commissioners gave the health department permission in May to apply for the grant. The commissioners will take a formal vote later in August.
The money will go to the hiring of more dentists. It will also expand its offerings for children. Health administrators hope to create a portable dental clinic to reach out to some high-risk elementary schools.
