A new parks district may be on the horizon in Greensboro. The creation of a Battleground Parks District was proposed Tuesday. Officials and city leaders want to connect four hundred acres of parkland in Northwest Greensboro to create one huge area attraction.
The plan links Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, the Greensboro Science Center and other parks in that area in an effort to draw more visitors. According to the Greensboro News and Record, the proposal has been two years in the making. The idea is that they would share resources and cross-promote the offerings at each place. The total cost is $20 million, but some of that money has already been approved or allocated for smaller parts of the project. Each attraction would remain under its current ownership.
The new district's promoters liken it to Central Park in New York City or Balboa Park in San Diego. Assistant Greensboro City Manager Chris Wilson said they hope to move as quickly as possible and that they need to start marketing together immediately. Some of the road work and signage is already in the works.
