A memorial service for Piedmont special needs educator Michael Britt will be held Saturday at Wake Forest's Wait Chapel. Britt, 66, died Wednesday at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness.

A native of Winston-Salem, Britt was a strong advocate for special needs children in his roles as principal of The Children's Center for the Physically Disabled and executive director of the Centers for Exceptional Children.  He was an educator for more than 40 years, and was involved in special needs youth for more than two decades.

Britt was instrumental in the merger of The Children's Center and The Special Children's School into the Centers for Exceptional Children in 2010.

He graduated from Reynolds High School and Wake Forest University. He earned a master's degree in counseling from Wake Forest in 1978 and became a counselor at what was then Paisley High School. Britt became principal of the Children's Center in 1993. He retired last June.

A memorial service will be held at Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 17, 2015. A reception will follow at the Children's Center for the Physically Disabled on Coliseum Drive in Winston-Salem.
