There were dueling rallies and some verbal sparring over the future of the Confederate memorial in Hillsborough. Five to six hundred people attended the Southern Heritage Ride and Rally over the weekend.

The event planners hoped to draw as many as 1,500 people downtown in support of the Confederate flag. According to ABC 11 news, organizers decided to hold the rally after the town board began to take steps to remove Confederate signage from the Orange County Historical Museum.

The Hillsborough police reported that the rally was peaceful, with no arrests. A Facebook post from the police noted that folks with opposing views were participating in a noise contest and called it a great example of free speech.
