A Winston-Salem city council member suggests that the city should change the name of the Dixie Classic Fair. James Taylor called the name a divisive one that evokes the Confederacy.

Taylor made his remarks to fellow council members Monday night after consultants had presented a report on how to better manage the fairgrounds — one that did not include changing the name of the fair.

According to the Winston-Salem Journal, Taylor cited a widespread re-examination of symbols of the Confederacy that has taken place since the Charleston shootings in June.

Taylor said he has backing on the council for a name change, which he said would not take place until the public has had a chance to weigh in on the idea.

The name Dixie Classic Fair only dates back to 1956. Before that, it was the Forsyth County Fair held on the Forsyth County Fairgrounds.
