The legal fallout from a massive coal ash spill last year continues for Duke Energy. A shareholder says in a lawsuit that the company improperly influenced state regulators.
The lawsuit is under seal in a state business court but was mentioned in a quarterly securities filing.
The Charlotte Observer reports that a plaintiff claims Duke directors improperly influenced state Department of Environment and Natural Resources officials to minimize regulation against the energy giant.
The shareholder complaint represents only one side of the dispute.
A DENR spokesman told the Observer the agency doesn't comment on pending litigation. Duke officials called the lawsuit baseless.
The lawsuit is one of several filed by shareholders against Duke Energy after almost 40,000 tons of coal ash spilled into the Dan River last February.
