Early voting is off to a brisk start locally.
In Guilford County, more than 1,000 people voted Thursday, the opening day of early voting. That compares to 131 on the first day of early voting in 2010, the last non-presidential election year.
Charlie Collicutt, Guilford County's director of elections, says the preliminary results indicate that early voting could be popular this year.
Collicutt says there may be logistical reasons for the increase in early voting turnout. The early period has been shortened by a week, which may have had an effect on the opening day turnout. Also, he says there are more places to vote early this year.
Early voting turnout also increased in Forsyth County on the first day. A total of 343 people voted Thursday, compared to 161 on the first day of 2010.
