Guilford County's Board of Elections has responded to the county redistricting lawsuit. Lawyers for the board argued that they shouldn't take a position on the constitutionality of the new law.
The Guilford County Board of Elections filed its reply Monday in the federal lawsuit over the Guilford County redistricting. The board was the subject of the lawsuit since they are responsible for the first use of the new law. The elections board will implement the new redistricting law in the fall elections.
According to the News and Record, since the lawsuit claims constitutional violations, the North Carolina Attorney General office was offered standing in the case. But last week a spokesperson for Roy Cooper's office said it will not assign attorneys to the case. Cooper's office said in a statement that if the General Assembly wants the new law defended, it can hire outside counsel. On Friday a spokesperson for House Speaker Tim Moore said his office had not yet read the lawsuit and no decision about hiring outside counsel had been made.
