Record low temperatures are expected in our region beginning Wednesday night. Emergency management officials in the state are preparing for the bitter cold snap. In Guilford County, a major concern is making sure that pipes in homes and businesses are protected after several flooding incidents occurred last winter.
Don Campbell, emergency management division director for Guilford County, says his agency is working with the community to prevent something like this from happening again.
“The challenge is when the temperatures get this low and stay this low for a number of days, people tend to have outdoor spigots and other pipes that are very close to the exterior of the home that tend to freeze," says Campbell.
He advises to keep water flowing through the pipes or keeping them heated by putting up extra insulation, or even shining a light on them.
High Point University's School of Education was forced to close after a sprinkler system pipe burst and in Greensboro, more than 2,000 toys, books and articles of clothing for needy children were damaged from flooding after a pipe burst in the storage facility at BackPack Beginnings.
