Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill is expected to run for North Carolina Attorney General. O'Neill's bid would enliven an already competitive race.

He would be the second Republican to announce his intention to run, following state Sen. Buck Newton's June announcement.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports that although he hasn't made his decision official, O'Neill organized a campaign committee in April, and the State Board of Elections received a statement of organization in May.

The race is expected to be competitive because current state Attorney General Roy Cooper, a Democrat, is expected to run for Governor in 2016. Two Democrats have also announced they're in the race: state Sen. Josh Stein of Raleigh and Fayetteville lawyer Tim Dunn.
