The weather forecast for Saturday is not exactly arctic, but that won't stop the plucky participants in the Polar Plunge from jumping into the pool.
The Guilford County Sheriff's Department is sponsoring the 13th Annual Polar Plunge as a fundraiser for Special Olympics. As Deputy Cindy Martin explains, the festivities will take place at Wet & Wild Emerald Pointe in Greensboro.
“We're going to have 64-degree weather tomorrow, and we should have about 2,000 people come through the park,” says Martin. “Family members come out, we have displays and Emerald Pointe sets up little things throughout the park for us.”
“We also are partnering with the Shriners, so usually, in our jumping category, anywhere from 150 to 240 people will take the plunge. It just depends on the day,” Martin says.
Each jumper will bring a minimum $50 donation and “Jumpers in Training” – those aspiring jumpers age 8 and younger – can jump into a warm-water pool for a $10 donation.
Registration for the event is from 10 a.m. until Noon on Saturday, February 22.
The Guilford County Sheriff's Department hopes to raise $50,000 dollars for Special Olympics from this one event.
