Senators have given their initial OK to reworking North Carolina's gasoline tax. Supporters say it provides quick relief to motorists but opponents argue it's a tax increase in disguise.

The chamber gave tentative approval Wednesday to the measure, which would reduce the gas tax from 37.5 cents per gallon to 35 cents for the rest of 2015, starting March 1. The tax floor would be 35 cents moving forward.

Republicans backing the bill say it will provide stability and ensure road projects in the pipeline get completed on time. Others say the tax rate would go far below 35 cents come July 1 if the current formula remains in place.

One more Senate vote is expected Thursday before the bill moves to the House.
