OPHIRA EISENBERG, HOST:
Say hello to our next contestants, Darrell DeMakes and Matt Accornero.
(APPLAUSE)
EISENBERG: Darrell, I don't usually talk to people about their previous game show experiences, but I love the fact that you were on MTV's "Remote Control" in the '80s.
(APPLAUSE)
DARRELL DEMAKES: Yup, that's right - big up for the '80s, y'all.
EISENBERG: But you lost to a question about Dr. Ruth - is that right?
DEMAKES: That's right, I was in the speed round, and it was, name the impish sex education doctor, and I said Dr. Joyce Brothers.
EISENBERG: Oh, yeah, sure.
DEMAKES: And then I get pulled back in the chair and Adam Sandler was an extra on the show...
EISENBERG: Yeah.
DEMAKES: And he was like, ha ha.
(LAUGHTER)
EISENBERG: Are you filled with shame? Is this like a redemption thing?
DEMAKES: This is a redemption thing, yeah. This is my - really fulfillment of a lifetime of regret and remorse.
(LAUGHTER)
EISENBERG: Matt describes himself as a hesitant tri-athlete. What does that mean? You tell me.
MATT ACCORNERO: So I like biking and running, but I'm not much of a swimmer and I don't particularly care for spandex or really the other people that do triathlons and so...
(LAUGHTER)
EISENBERG: I like to say that I've never run a marathon because I've never had a breakup that bad.
ACCORNERO: Right, right.
(LAUGHTER)
EISENBERG: OK, well, this game is called Get Them to the ER. The answers will be famous people whose name ends with the letter E-R. Sound simple? There's more. In each clue, you're going to hear two hints - one that describes who the person is and one that will tip you off to his or her last name. For an example to clarify everything, let's go to our puzzle guru Art Chung.
ART CHUNG, BYLINE: So if we said Willy Loman's creator had a side job grinding wheat into flour, the answer would be Arthur Miller because a mill grinds flour.
EISENBERG: Yeah.
CHUNG: And Arthur Miller wrote "Death Of A Salesman."
DEMAKES: Mind blown.
EISENBERG: Yeah. So, you know, you can go slow, you can talk it out and - we have hints?
CHUNG: No.
EISENBERG: No, there's no hints, so just do the best you can. Here we go. This game show host liked to yap like a dog especially when he was neutering them.
(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)
EISENBERG: Matt.
ACCORNERO: Bob Barker.
EISENBERG: That is correct.
(APPLAUSE)
EISENBERG: Kind of a disturbing clue to start on. Even though this New Jersey senator is a prolific tweeter, he still likes to read one of these old-fashioned word packages every now and then. New Jersey senator - he tweets a lot.
(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)
EISENBERG: Darrell.
DEMAKES: Anthony Weiner?
CHUNG: Not a senator and not from New Jersey.
(LAUGHTER)
CHUNG: He used to be the mayor of Newark.
(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)
ACCORNERO: Cory Booker?
CHUNG: That's right, Matt, well done.
(APPLAUSE)
EISENBERG: This actor who played Troy Barnes on "Community" would throw down the gauntlet to challenge any rapper as his alter ego, Childish Gambino.
CHUNG: Not the son of the guy from "Lethal Weapon."
(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)
CHUNG: Matt.
ACCORNERO: So his last name's Glover, and it's not Danny Glover.
EISENBERG: When I said talk it through, I didn't know that you were actually going to...
ACCORNERO: Sorry.
EISENBERG: ...But no, no you're supposed to. It's great, no one ever takes advantage of it. I like it.
ACCORNERO: I'm going to go with Adrian Glover.
EISENBERG: Adrian Glover.
CHUNG: Amazingly, no...
EISENBERG: No.
CHUNG: ...It's not.
(LAUGHTER)
EISENBERG: Darrell, you've got a lot to work with. Can you do it?
DEMAKES: It's something like - I see his face, and I like his rapping. And I love "Community," and it's Andy Glover.
EISENBERG: OK, all right - wrong. Donald Glover is what we were going for. Known for her self-critical jokes and smoker's laugh, this comedian liked to make her own pickles at home using a certain feathery herb.
(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)
EISENBERG: Darrell.
DEMAKES: Phyllis Diller.
EISENBERG: Yes, my friend.
(APPLAUSE)
EISENBERG: This Sports Illustrated swimsuit model and "Just Go With It" actress loves to adorn any hall she passes through with copious amounts of holly.
(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)
EISENBERG: Matt.
ACCORNERO: Brooklyn Decker.
EISENBERG: Yeah, here we are.
(APPLAUSE)
EISENBERG: We've entered the wheelhouse, have we? Swimsuit models?
DEMAKES: New Jersey senators, not so much - but...
EISENBERG: The director and co-star of this classic film, "Easy Rider," was known to jump around on one foot when waiting for the camera to roll.
(SOUNDBITE OF BELL)
EISENBERG: Darrell?
DEMAKES: Dennis Hopper.
EISENBERG: Dennis Hopper is correct. Hard game - you guys did great. Art Chung, how did our contestants do?
CHUNG: Matt was the winner of that round. Congratulations, Matt, we'll see you in the final round.
(SOUNDBITE OF MUSIC)
EISENBERG: Coming up, we're going to talk to Aasif Mandvi about being senior Muslim/Middle East/all things brown correspondent on "The Daily Show," so don't go anywhere unless you're driving, in which case, keep going. I'm Ophira Eisenberg, and this is NPR's ASK ME ANOTHER. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
