The company is bringing its ultra-fast fiber optic Internet service to Charlotte and the Research Triangle area. These cities will now be getting their Internet and TV service at extremely high rates of speed.
In February, Google announced it would work with 34 cities in nine metropolitan areas to explore bringing Google Fiber to those communities. Those cities underwent a vetting process that examined infrastructure and construction permitting processes. Based on those criteria, Google targeted Charlotte and the Raleigh-Durham area as capable of becoming a viable market for its service.
A statement from officials in Charlotte said Google Fiber is to be installed over the next 24 months. The company also announced faster service over new fiber-optic cables in Nashville, and Atlanta. Google Fiber is already available in Kansas City, Provo, Utah, and Austin, Texas.
At speeds of more than 50 times the national broadband average, gigabit service can download an entire movie in less than two minutes.
Prices for Google Fiber are comparable to or below what most households already pay. For example, in the Kansas City market, Google Fiber charges about $70 per month for just high-speed Internet service, or $120 for an Internet and TV package.
