Gov. Pat McCrory has declared a state of emergency for North Carolina in the wake of a winter storm that's left hundreds of thousands without power.

Associated Press -- McCrory issued the declaration Friday, hours after the storm left central North Carolina coated in snow, sleet and freezing rain.

At least 350,000 utility customers were without power, but officials were hoping to have power restored by late Friday.

While snow and ice created headaches in some areas, heavy rain was a different issue for other areas in central North Carolina. The National Weather Service issued a flood warning after some places reported up to 2 inches.

While N.C. Department of Transportation officials urged caution on the roads, passenger rail service was disrupted between Charlotte and Raleigh.
