The Triad is awash in large-scale construction projects right now. As one of the oldest projects nears completion, the implications for future growth are beginning to emerge.
The Greensboro urban loop has been in the planning stages since the 1980s. But now, city officials expect developers to start moving forward on their plans, as important work along the northern and eastern sections of the loop wrap up by 2022. Katie Arcieri, a reporter with the Triad Business Journal, has been following the story.
“Once built out, the remaining loop sections will also further ease congestion particularly around the northeast section of the city, open up massive chunks of land for development, and provide an easier route for those traveling from Rockingham County and other northern points to the Piedmont Triad International Airport,” says Arcieri.
The price tag for the entire Greensboro urban loop is more than $890 million dollars.
Arcieri says the last sections of the loop are also significant because they are part of nearly $1 billion worth of transportation projects that will either be under construction or slated for completion over the next several years in the Greensboro area, including a Battleground/U.S. 220 widening, along with the widening of West Market Street and High Point Road.
