The High Point Chamber of Commerce is hosting a forum tonight featuring candidates for mayor and city council.
It's likely to be a defining election for the city. Three candidates are vying for mayor to take the place of Bernita Sims, who did not complete her first term. Sims resigned as mayor last month just before pleading guilty to a felony worthless check charge. The council voted a year ago to ask Sims to resign. She declined, but did not file for re-election.
Becky Smothers is another familiar face that won't be part of the new council. Smothers - who was first elected to council in 1977 and was elected mayor six times – is not seeking re-election this year. Overall there are eight candidates for two at-large seats, and all six ward seats are being contested.
High Point is also searching for a new city manager after long-time manager Strib Boynton retired in July. That search is expected to go beyond the November election.
The forum will be held on the campus of High Point University.
