Thousands of Americans are being targeted by a new tax scam.
According to the IRS, people are getting phone calls from individuals claiming to be with the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. The caller claims the person owes taxes and must pay them immediately using a credit or debit card. Mark Hanson is an IRS spokesman based in Greensboro. He says many people are falling for this scam because the caller proves they have some information connected with the target. Hanson explains to WFDD's Kathryn Mobley collectively, Americans have paid more than $1 million to these culprits. Hanson also encourages people to not carry their social security card with them. He says if their wallet is stolen, then they will be vulnerable to identity theft. Tax payers can get help at the IRS help line, 1-800-829-1040.
